Underneath the faded paint, hand-lettered signage, and worn-out grill is a long history of satisfied appetites, as well as a name that several owners have chosen to keep, indicating a warm and recognizable connection between the present and past. Dating back to the 1920s, everyone has a restaurant that their parents, grandparents, or even great grandparents would always take them to. These Oʻahu restaurants have become treasured icons in Hawaiʻi's food culture after enduring the passing of time.

Look below to view a story map that shows what restaurants on the island of OÊ»ahu have a special place in our hearts.
As a mixed group of Hawai'i residents and new incomers, we wanted to choose four historic local restaurants that we felt have had an impact on our lives and on the lives of our families and friends. While visiting these restaurants, we recalled memories and unforgettable experiences that we hope others can experience as well. Through this project, we want to commemorate these historic restaurants that have been here all these years and continue to have an impact upon people's lives.
