Highway Inn

Highway Inn has been serving ono Hawaiian food since 1947. Every morning, the lau lau is wrapped by hand in the same style as it was 70 years ago. Since their beginning, their menu hasn't altered much, and the reason for this is simple: families have grown up eating, enjoying, and returning for Highway Inn's authentic, traditional Hawaiian cuisine.

The local ingredients that make up Highway Inn's traditional Hawaiian cuisine!

Highway Inn 1983 Leoku st. Waipahu, Hi. This was the first year that Highway Inn moved to their current location! Although the building has experienced renovations, this is still the main location.

History

Highway Inn was created in September 1947 by a Japanese-American Seiichi Toguchi. Toguchi was born in Hawaiʻi, but raised in Okinawa, Japan. He was 14 years old when he got a job as a dishwasher starting the path to becoming a restaurant owner himself. Seiichi learned to cook Hawaiian food and eventually was promoted to cook’s apprentice.

On December 7, 1941 the Japanese military attacked Pearl Harbor on Oʻahu. This event led to president Franklin D. Roosevelt signing executive order 9066 that incarcerated Americans of Japanese descent in isolation camps in an attempt to prevent espionage. Executive order 9066 affected the lives of more than 120,000 people in the United State. Seiichi Toguchi and his family were amongst the Japanese-Americans that were rounded up as a result of the WWII isolation camps.

In 1946, Toguchi and his family returned to Hawaiʻi from the isolation camps where he worked various jobs to try to put food on the table. Eventually his interest in cooking and his need to put food on his own family’s table aligned. In 1947, Seiichi and his wife Nancy opened the first Highway Inn on Farrington highway. The restaurant steadily gained popularity for its local style cuisine and in 1960 the restaurant moved to Waipahu near the Waipahu Sugar Mill and plantation. As the next generation of Toguchi took over, the restaurant again moved in 1984 to its current location on Leoku street. In 2000 the family opened Highway Inn Seafood Market on Moloalo St in Waipahu. With the opening of the seafood market, Highway Inn was able to offer more in the form of catering and events. Finally in 2013, Highway Inn opened its location in Kakaʻako.

Experience

Highway Inn is one of the places to go to in Hawaiʻi for traditional Hawaiian food. Many customers were regulars, out-of-state and homesick locals, or even visitors to Hawaiʻi that are hoping to experience a taste of Hawaiian culture. As we excitedly dove into our Hawaiian plates, we immediately sighed with feelings of joy and comfort as nothing beats traditional Hawaiian food.

We also stopped by the Bishop Museum Cafe by Highway Inn Bishop Museum. Despite the fact that the café did not have a large variety of options upon their menu as the other Highway Inn locations (due to CO-VID), it did serve a Hawaiian plate classic: kiawe-smoked kālua pig bowl. As this cafe is right within the vicinity of the Bishop Museum, it provides people a taste of authentic Hawaiian food while learning about its culture!

Favorite Dishes

Pork Lau Lau Tasting Plate

One of Highway Inn's most popular and iconic Hawaiian dishes. It comes with pork lau lau, poi, squid lūʻau, kālua pig, lomi salmon, chicken long rice, and sweet potato!

Beef Stew Combo Plate

Another local favorite! It is beef that is slow-cooked in tomato base with carrots and potatoes. It is served with rice or poi, pipikaula, and haupia with a choice of lomi salmon, mac salad, or local greens!
