History

In 1950, Roy and Koo Takakuwa opened a tiny retail outlet on Liliha Street selling Roy's loaves of bread.1 Their popularity outgrew the little store that in 1961, the Takakuwa's moved to Kuakini Street, and kept Liliha in their name to remind them of their roots.

At their bakery, customers would sit at the counter or booths enjoying a range of 150 items baked from scratch.2 This place built a strong community, where today, customers would say they came here when they were little and are now bringing their children and grandchildren to experience the bakery.3 Multi-generational is what helps keep this bakery alive with the local community. Liliha Bakery definitely established a "family place" among the locals in Hawaiʻi.

One of their popular pastries is a Japanese inspire-ring shaped donut known today as the Poi Mochi Donut.4 Liliha Bakery is committed to baking fresh cakes and pastries with local ingredients. They also do not sell their bakery items elsewhere in Hawaii.

In 2008, Peter Kim, owner of Yummy Restaurant, took over the business. Since then, Liliha Bakery expanded to 3 more locations at Nimitz Highway, Ala Moana Shopping Center at Macy's and the International Marketplace in Waikīkī.

Experience

When you're craving for an after dinner dessert in town, the Waikiki location is open til 10pm to satisfy your needs. Finding parking at the International Market Place is difficult on a weekend, so be sure to plan accordingly. Located on the third floor, the newest Liliha Bakery location has an elevated, modern almost fine-dining experience rather than the original full-bakery diner feeling. When you enter the restaurant, you are greeted by a plethora of desserts, pastries, and cakes. This is hard to miss because of the non-organized line. If it's your first time, trying their coco puffs are the safest and best option. Also, don't worry about finding a space to sit, the International Market Place has a choice of seating areas or you can enjoy these desserts anywhere. You've heard that food brings people together. Well, this dessert has the power to do just that!
